Over recent years the price of storage capacity has been reducing as the capacity required has increased. As a result, the trend has often been to simply add capacity.
In many cases this approach leads to problems of redundant data and poor utilisation. These problems in turn cause increased utility costs and difficulties in storage management as well as backup, retrieval and recovery.
